So much exposition. I understand novellas by in large have a lot of exposition, since they have limited time to get their story across, but lordy this was a lot.Not only that but right before the giant exposition moment it switches first person POVs from Lilac to Julien, sticks to him for a while, then randomly switches back?
There isn't really any impetus here. at first I was intrigued because she gets a mysterious offer from a weird guy to help renovate her dream castle. She feels kindred to it, like she's home. She's treated like she's the mistress of the house. Julien is familiar.
But then the author must have realized she was running out of word count because Lilac does one stupid thing after another, the entire mystery is dumped in our laps, Lilac's friend interferes (PS: not the way the police work actually) for no reason and it all ends how you expect.
This sort of has shades of Beauty & the Beast (especially with the French connections, Julien's curse, how to break said curse and the random 'i love you enough to let you leave so I can die a horrible death' clause), but in the end I was so annoyed at the rush job I wanted everyone to burn up in a fiery ball of flames.

I love the concept of the Skeleton Key books. Each of the 30 books are written by a different author, and each is separate and a standalone, but the one thing they all have in common is a skeleton key that opens the door to a new world. These books are romantic and adventurous fantasy stories. I've read several of them, and they are all so different. It's great.
This one is about Lilac and Julien. Lilac puts her life on hold to return to Virginia to take care of her ailing mother, until she passes away. Without an idea of what to do, she's offered the job to restore the local castle, Chateau de Soleil. She meets the owner, who happens to be a vampire. She finds a skeleton key and it leads to a room that unlocks memories of why the vampire, Julien, is so familiar to her. She has a short amount of time to save Julien and the Chateau and must make some big decisions.
I liked the characters, although with friends like Robin, Lilac certainly doesn't need any enemies. Even though it was a novella, it felt like a complete story. Sometimes things are rushed, or left off, but this one felt complete. The story was told from Julien's POV and from Lilac's POV, along with a little assistance from the help. I liked the vampire and tweaks that made them unique. There wasn't any actual sex scenes. The little bit of violence came from the vampires, but it wasn't very much nor graphic.
I liked the Skeleton Key books and look forward to reading more of them.

This is a true romance. The best part is that it is clean and any age appropriate. It will leave you with a smile on your face and in your heart. I loved it!!
I really enjoyed this novella, reminds me of when paranormal entertainment first started. Please continue with these stories and I'll continue to read them.
Wonderful blend of vampire lore, reincarnation, witches, and curses. A sweet forgotten love that transcends time if the right circumstances will unlock the mystery. Interesting that impact of friendships in this book. The hero and heroine both have best friends that betray them, with very different impacts. A lot of important characters play a big part in this mystery.
MY REVIEW
This is the first time I have read anything by Liliana Rhodes and it was a very short and gets straight to the point. This Novella and wasted no time in getting to the main plot.
Julien and Lilac's story begins 200 years ago. A love that was meant to grow with a promise of marriage. Although the night of their engagement a curse was put upon Juliens home. Their happiness taken away in a flash.
Now after 200 years and Lilac reincarnated they meet once more and then that's where the story really got interesting to me. I will not give away ANY surprises on this Novella.
I enjoyed the love story between Julien and Lilac. How love can grow stronger throughout time. I also see how LOVE can conquer time, curses, and even death.
